    CAR FREE VANCOUVER

The street is being made available to the community. The community is invited to enjoy the street responsibly.

All activity must be clear of the street by 7PM and the streets must be left clean.

Open Streets will be much smaller in scale than the Car Free Festival – a small fraction of the number of participants is expected. Very few pre-programmed activities are planned.

Merchants are invited to expand their shops onto the street, however no third party vending will be permitted.

    Community Participation Guidelines
-This is public space for the neighbourhood to enjoy.
-The community is invited to use the space responsibly for non-commercial activities.
-Play hockey, bocce, checkers, giant board games – draw on the street: a picture, a path, the center of the universe, roll out a living room, set up a free store, create some street theatre, dance, sing, write, play, ride a crazy bike, juggle, skip rope, build a street garden…
-Pre-registration is not required to use the space, however, if the activity you plan will be amplified or will have a large impact please inform Amy Weeks, our Community Liaison, of your plans prior to the event at openstreets@carfreevancouver.org.

    Performance Guidelines
    -Performance for donations is permitted.
-Preference will be given to local performers.
    -Unamplified performance is preferred.
-Pre-registration is not required, however, if more than three performers/groups wish to use the same block, free time-limited permits will be issued for use of the space on the day of the event. Permits will be issued by the block captains assigned to each block.
-No more than one amplified performance will be permitted per block.
-All performance must maintain a small and responsible acoustic footprint.

    Non-Profit Organization Guidelines
-Non-profit organizations are invited to participate.
-Local organizations will be given priority.
    -Creative activism/promotion is encouraged.
-No equipment will be provided by Car Free Vancouver.
-Any commercial activity must be a minimal part of the participation.
-Pre-registration is not required, however, if more than three organizations wish to use the same block, free permits will be issued for use of the space. Permits will be issued by the block captains assigned to each block.
-If the activity you plan will be amplified or will have a large impact please inform Amy Weeks, our Community Liaison, of your plans prior to the event at openstreets@carfreevancouver.org.

    Merchant Participation Guidelines
-Merchants are encouraged to expand their shops onto the street.
-Car Free Vancouver holds the Special Event Market Permit to allow merchants to sell on the street, however, preparing or storing food or serving alcohol on the street will require a merchant to obtain further permits from the relevant authorities.
-No corporate branding or promotional activities will be permitted – this is a local event.
-As this is an opportunity for merchants to engage with the community at no cost, Car Free Vancouver asks that merchants assist the event by providing infrastructure in kind – please allow participants the use of your washrooms, whether or not they have made a purchase, no portable washrooms will be provided on the street. Also, please ensure that you provide garbage and recycling capacity on the street which exceeds the needs of your operation.
-The space in front of a merchant may only be used by the merchant, no third party vending will be permitted.
-All activity must be clear of the street by 7PM and the streets must be left clean.
-Performance in front of your shop is welcome, however, if the performance will be amplified or is likely to have a large impact, please inform Michelle Barile at the Commercial Drive Business Society (info@thedrive.ca) prior to the event.
-All performance must maintain a small and responsible acoustic footprint.
